About the Artwork
 
Dominique is the first work in the People and Plants collection—a series exploring the interconnected relationship between humanity and the natural world through symbolic portraiture. Each artwork in the series represents a season, with Dominique symbolizing Summer. Inspired by Kenzie's home and travels throughout the Caribbean, the painting explores the relationship between people and the natural world.
 
Symbolism
 
The name Dominique, meaning "of the Lord," is the feminine form of Dominic.
The palm leaf crowning her head symbolizes protection and draws inspiration from the biblical verse to "guard your heart and mind." In many cultures, plants are also worn as crowns to represent honor, victory, and status.
 
The bold colors reflect the harmony between land and sea—her dark complexion symbolizes the earth, while the vibrant green palm leaf and turquoise background evoke the tropical landscape.
